A = The student demonstrates excellent or outstanding performance in relation to expected learning
outcomes for the course. (86% – 100%)
B = The student demonstrates very good performance in relation to expected outcomes for the course.
(73% – 85%)
C+ = The student demonstrates good performance in relation to expected learning outcomes for the
course. (67% – 72%)
C = The student demonstrates satisfactory performance in relation to expected learning
outcomes for the course. (60% – 66%)
C- = The student demonstrates minimally acceptable performance in relation to expected learning
outcomes for the course. (50% – 59%)
I = The student is making progress but it has been determined that additional time is required to meet the
expected learning outcomes for the course. Please find attached a separate “I” Plan indicating areas that
need further attention or development and specific requirements that need to be fulfilled in relation to the
expected learning outcomes.
F = (Failed or Failing) The student has not demonstrated, or is not demonstrating, the minimally
acceptable performance in relation to the expected learning outcomes for the course. An “F” may only be
assigned if an “I” has been previously assigned. (0% – 49%)
W = (Withdrawal) The administrative officer in charge of a school, in accordance with the policy of the
Board, may grant permission to a student to withdraw from a course, upon the request of the parent
of the student, or when appropriate, the student.
SG = (Standing Granted) Although completion of normal requirements is not possible, sufficient level of
performance has been attained to warrant, consistent with the best interests of the student, the
granting of standing for the course.
TS = (Transfer Standing) May be granted by the administrative officer in charge of a school on the basis
of an examination of records from an institution other than a school as defined in the School Act.
The four-point provincial proficiency scale is used in K-9 to communicate student progress in all areas of learning. The four points on the scale are:
• EMERGING – the student demonstrates an initial understanding of the concepts and competencies relevant to the expected learning.
• DEVELOPING – the student demonstrates a partial understanding of the concepts and competencies of relevant to the expected learning.
• PROFICIENT – the student demonstrates a complete understanding of the concepts and competencies of relevant to the expected learning.
• EXTENDING – the student demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the concepts and competencies of the expected learning.
At the end of each school year, VSS has an awards ceremony to recognize those students who have excelled in academics, athletics, fine arts, and technology education as well as students who have exemplified service and citizenship in our school and community. The following is a list of awards presented at our annual awards ceremony:
Principal’s List, Honor Roll, Subject awards, Award of Excellence (grades 8 and 9), Grades 10 – 12 Top Overall student, Athletic Awards, and Service and Citizenship awards.
Grades 10 – 12
Principal’s List: Awarded for excellence in all courses when an “A” is earned in all enrolled courses for the term.
Honor Roll: Awarded for all “B’s” or above and student did not qualify for Principal’s list.
Grade 10 and 11: 4 courses per semester
Grade 12: At least 3 courses per semester
The above awards are presented at the end of each semester.
Top Overall student, Service and Citizenship awards, Individual Subject Awards and Awards of Excellence (grades 8 and 9) are awarded at year end awards ceremony:
Each department selects its top students. This selection is done by individual department committees and not necessarily by final marks. Departments determine award winners and department criteria.
