Code of Conduct

Silver Star Code of Conduct

The purpose of the Silver Star Code of Conduct is to promote the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law – prohibitting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation, gender identity, expression and age in respect of discriminatory publication and discrimination in accommodation, service, and facility in the school environment.

At Silver Star School, our Code of Conduct is based on the following Rights and Responsibilities:

The Rights and Responsibilities of everyone, whether child or adult, at Silver Star School are:

Everyone has a right to learn.

  • We have a responsibility to listen to directions, work in our school as instructed, and follow class procedures when we have a question, concern, or a need to leave the room.

Everyone has a right to hear, and be heard in our school.

  • We have a responsibility not to talk, shout, or make noises in our school when others are speaking.

Everyone has a right to be respected.

  • We have a responsibility to be respectful to everyone in our school and not to tease or bug other people, or to hurt their feelings by using inappropriate language or tone.

Everyone has a right to feel safe, and be safe in our school.

  • We have a responsibility not to threaten, kick, punch, or physically or emotionally harm anyone else.

We have a right to privacy and to our own personal space in our school.

  • We have a responsibility to respect the personal property of others, and to accept their right to privacy.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

At Silver Star School we believe in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). PBS emphasizes modeling and reinforcing positive social behavior.  Students are taught expected behaviors and are acknowledged and rewarded for following them.  Collaboration, consensus, and consistency are the keys to a successful PBS system.  Please refer to the School-Wide Behavior Expectations and Settings Matrix. Please note, these expectations apply to behaviour at the school, during school-organized or sponsored activities, and behaviour beyond these times (including on-line behaviour) that negatively impacts the safe, caring, or orderly environment of the school, and/or student learning.

At Silver Star, we also believe that:

  • No one has the right at Silver Star School to make anyone else feel unsafe.
  • No student has the right to interfere with the learning of other students.
  • No student has the right to interfere with the teacher’s ability to teach.
  • Parents will be kept informed regarding their child’s behavior at school.
  • Parents are responsible for their children.
  • All students are treated in a firm, fair, consistent, and respectful manner.
  • We believe that everyone has the ability to choose the kinds of things they say and do for themselves and others.
  • Students at Silver Star will be provided with the opportunity to develop and practice the skills of being assertive.
  • Being assertive means “standing up for your rights, feelings, and opinions without stepping on someone else’s rights, feelings, and opinions.”
