Hillview Elementary is the learning center for 365 students in Kindergarten to Grade 7. Located in a rural setting, our school has been described as having a warm country feeling. We have 16 classrooms, a vibrant library, learning support center, aboriginal welcome room, gym and music room. We are supported by a very active parent group and volunteers from the community.
In September 2016, we revisited our vision setting activities. Our mission statement:
” Hillview Elementary is a respectful learning community committed to each child’s success. We value a safe, healthy and happy place to learn.”
Hillview HEROES motto is evident throughout our school: Hillview Encourages Respect for Others, the Environment and Self.
At Hillview Elementary, we are committed to each child’s success. We strive to develop perseverant, capable, confident, curious learners.
Heroes pride is evident throughout the school. We embrace our motto of Respect for Others, the Environment and Self with consistency, celebration and spirit.
Our teacher teams work together to support student learning with collaborative inquiry and a commitment to meeting student needs.
Our parent survey in September 2017, identified the staff support for students and the positive culture and welcoming nature of the school as areas of strength for Hillview.
We are striving to meet individual student needs while maintaining classroom connections. Differentiating instruction with structures and supports is a focus for reading and writing instruction.

Meeting our Reading Needs
Assessments and observations of student learning have identified reading as an area for intervention.
Results of PM Benchmarks, WCRA, Report Cards, FSAs and classroom teacher observations are used to identify needs and plan for instruction.
Our focus is on our students that are Not Yet Meeting in Reading.
Our team includes: literacy intervention teacher, classroom teacher, school based resource teacher, CEAs, and administrators.
Meeting our Writing Needs
Assessments and observations have identified writing as an area of focus for our learners. In May/June our staff had our students participate in a school wide write. Together staff worked to assess and analyze the results.

Reading Intervention in Action
Our team has identified students for term 1 intervention. We are trained in the use of Fontes and Pinelle’s Levelled Literacy Intervention. Together our team is using this resource to supplement reading instruction in the classroom. The LLI resource includes direct teaching, supported with levelled literacy books. In addition, there is a writing component that is woven into the intervention.
Writing intervention in action
We are in the process of using our collaboration time to determine the area of focus of writing. We recognize that the focus can vary from grade to grade. Together, the team is looking to identify strategies and resources to improve our school wide writing results.
